The Bronaugh Journal Newspaper

The Bronaugh Journal was published for about 45 years. For most of those years, the editor and owner was Billy Dorris with assistance from his sisters, Miss Maggie and Miss Eva.

Above is a very early photo of the Bronaugh Printing Office when it was obviously on the north side of the street (notice Methodist Church in background).

A 1936 WPA Survey of State and Local Historical Records was taken. It reported that the Bronaugh Journal was located on the south side of 4th street in Bronaugh. The Newspaper office had holdings from July 14, 1905 - May 1936. The issues from 1905 - 1934 were unbound but arranged. The 1934-1936 issues were loose. The printing press had been located at the rear of its 1936 location since 1921. The newspaper had general news and ads on the front and back. The inside two pages were "patent" meaning that only the front and back pages contained Bronaugh information.

Neither the State Historical Society in Columbia nor the County Library in Nevada have microfilms of these complete holdings mentioned above. Each has only microfilmed copies of a few scattered issues.

Here is the listing of issues that have been microfilmed by the state historical society. You will see that no issues prior to 1910 are listed. I hope we can find at least scattered copies of those early issues.

The Journal definitely began publication in July 1905.

Also in 1900-1901, there was an earlier Bronaugh paper called the Bronaugh Sentinel. Neither historical library has any copies of it and I have never seen a copy of it but I know it existed.

Can you help?:

1. BIG NEWS: In August 2004, Linn and Carol Holland located the Bronaugh Journal issues from 1909 - 1950. There are four big boxes of them. I have them on loan at this time and will make an inventory of what is there but it appears that most issues are in this collection. They are extremely fragile and I will work to get them flattened out so they can be read without too much damage. Then we will work on getting them microfilmed. This will take a few months, so please be patient.

2. Does anyone have any issues of the Bronaugh Sentinel? Has anyone ever seen an issue of the Sentinel. I haven't, but I have references to it.
