Eiben Family of Moundville

Albert (Elbert) Eiben was a resident of Harrison Township for a few years. He is being listed as a Moundville resident because he is buried at Moundville and his son's baptism took place at the Moundville Lutheran Church.

The first record of the Eiben family was in the baptism of the Moundville Lutheran Church. August Matthias Eiben was baptized on May 25, 1897. The church record lists his birth date as March 13, 1897. It lists his parents as Albert Eiben and Marg. Siefken. The old German handwriting plainly lists the spelling -Albert. It lists his godparents (sponsors) as Matthias Siefken and Marg. Haunschild.

Next, the family was listed in the 1900 census for Harrison Township, Vernon County, MO. From the neighbors listed, it appears that the family was living south of Bronaugh near the county line. The census refers to Elbert Eiben:

The birth date for Matthias is almost surely off by a year in the census since his baptism was listed in order in 1897 in the Lutheran church.

Albert Eiben died in 1904. There was no mention of his death in local newspapers nor in the records of the Moundville Lutheran Church. He was buried at Welborn Cemetery northwest of Moundville.

The only other mention of the Eiben's in Vernon County is that Frau (Mrs.) Eiben was among 32 members taking communion at the Moundville Lutheran Church in 1905.

Apparently Frau Eiben left Missouri following the death of her husband and moved back to Illinois. Cemetery records for Mount Hope Cemetery at Sibley, Ford County, Illinois list the burial for Marg. Eiben (1854 - 1925) and her son, William Eiben (1893 - 1939).

The Illinois death records give more specific dates and information about Margarete and William.
