Kuhlman Family of Moundville

Three Kuhlman brothers who were sons of Charles (or Carl) and Wilhelmine Stocksick (or Stockstill) Kuhlman came to Warren County, Missouri for several years before coming to Moundville Township.

The 1870 and 1880 census records below show this Kuhlman family living in Charette Township in Warren County, Missouri, near the town of Hopeville (in 1870).

1870 Census for Warren County, MO:

*The handwritten census says Chas, so it is hard to know whether Carl was using Charles as an Americanized name or whether the census taker simply made an error.

Carl Kuhlmann

Wilhelmine Kuhlmann

49

Henry Kuhlmann

Mary Kuhlmann

*The handwritten census names the town that Carl came from as Lippe Detmold.

There is a burial for Karl Kuhlman in Immanuel UCC Cemetery at Holstein in Warren County, Missouri. His birth date was Dec. 21, 1823 and his death date was April 5, 1892. His grave marker appears to say that he was from Lippe Detmold (Germany).

Buried in the same cemetery is Johanna Wilhelmina "Anna" Kuhlmann Schoppenhorst who is said to be the daughter of this Karl Kuhlman and wife Wilhelmina Stocksick. Johanna's dates are 1843 - 1927. Her death certificate does not confirm this, listing parents as unknown.

All three sons of Charles and Wilhelmine Kuhlman (August, Henry and Charles) moved to Vernon County, Missouri. Their mother, Wilhelmine, was with them since the 1900 census listed her as living in Vernon County, with her son, August Kuhlman, in Moundville Township.

That census listed August and his family.

Below is information about the three sons of Charles (Karl) and Wilhelmine Kuhlman. The three Kuhlman brothers married three Mische sisters, daughters of Henry Mische.

The photo above is shared by Vic and Sharon Fengler Hinds. It includes August and Caroline Mische Kuhlman with boys, Albert and George and girls, Winnie, Emma and Amanda.

The photo below is a later one of August and Caroline.

August and Caroline are buried at Bicket Cemetery:

  • August Kuhlman, February 8, 1856 - July 22, 1937. His death certificate lists him as son of Coss and Mamie Kuhlman but probably is supposed to say Carl and Minnie Stocksick or Stockstill Kuhlman.
  • Caroline Mische Kuhlman, March 25, 1861 - January 13, 1938

Amanda Kuhlman

The photo to the right is of Henry and Anna Mische Kuhlman.

They are buried at Bicket Cemetery:

Henry's death certificate lists him as son of Carl and Minnie Stockstill Kuhlman. This is the death certificate that is most easily read and the name Stockstill is plain. However, that does not absolutely mean that its correct. Census records indicate that Henry and Anna had no children.

Henry and August's brother Charley H. Kuhlman and wife Alwine Mische Kuhlman are also buried at Bicket:

Census records show that Charles and Winnie had one son, Carl.

During Victorian times (1890's), it was not uncommon for people to have name cards printed. Its obvious that the Kuhlman's did so.

These calling cards are from the Heinsohn family collection.

Left: Cards from August Kuhlmann, see below.

Right: Cards from Charley H. Kuhlman and his wife Alwine (Winnie) Mische Kuhlmann

Notice that in early days, the spelling Kuhlmann was used but by the time they died, they used Kuhlman on their grave markers.

An August Kuhlman family below was in Moundville (Drywood Township) very early and was featured in the 1887 History of Vernon County. We hope someone can explain how they are related to the families above. Since he is found in early census records for Charette Township, Warren County, the same county that Charles (Carl) Kuhlman was from, it seems reasonable to speculate that this August Kuhlman was perhaps a brother to Charles (Carl) Kuhlman. That is just speculation until we find some proof.

From History of Vernon County, Missouri. 1887, p. 831.

AUGUST KUHLMANN

(Farmer, Section 5, Post-office, Milo).

As one of the foreign-born residents of this portion of Vernon county, whose industry, frugality and thrift entitle them to more than passing mention in the present volume, is August Kuhlmann, who has been located here about six years. His career as an agriculturist since that time has established him firmly as one whom Vernon County is proud to own. He was born in Germany in 1833, September 24, and from his earliest recollections has been engaged in farming and the pursuits pertaining to that industry. Philip and Frederica Kuhlmann were his parents, and they, too, were natives of Das Vaterland. Young August remained at home until thirteen years of age, then emigrating to the United States, where he knew more favorable opportunities would be presented for his making his own way in life. Settling first in Warren county, Mo., he subsequently married there Miss Anna Wafie, a native of that county, this union being consummated in 1859. Following this Mr. Kuhlmann continued to attend to his chosen duties of farm life in that vicinity until 1881, when he came to Vernon County, and since then he has been actively and successfully engaged in the same calling, as his present valuable farm of 500 acres gives evidence. By closely attending to his daily duties, practicing economy and wisely caring for what he has obtained, he has come to be regarded a substantial citizen of this locality, and his outlook for the future is, indeed, bright. Mr. and Mrs. Kuhlmann have a family of nine children: August, Lizzie, William, Charlie, Mary, John, Amanda, Maggie and Edward.

This August Kuhlman family was listed in the 1870 Census for Charette Township, Warren County, MO:
