The Gregory family was among the earliest Moundville residents. Little is known about this family. Dinah, wife of H. Gregory was born December 2, 1842 and died May 14, 1889. She was buried at Beckmon Cemetery - a deserted cemetery located 3 miles west and one mile south of Moundville. Dinah Gregory was the wife of Henderson Gregory and the daughter of Robert Beckmon and his wife Minerva Kemp.
Note - The grave marker for Dinah below is plainly spelled Dinah. Early census records often refer to her as Diana, Dina etc.
Henderson Gregory appears in the 1870 Scott County,
Illinois census. He was age 29 and was a farm laborer on the
farm of the Philip Howell family. Henderson then
married Dinah Beckmon on August 28, 1873 in Scott County,
Illinois. They must have moved to Missouri almost
immediately aftr their marriage based on the birth places of
their children shown below. According to the 1880 Harrison Township census, the
Gregory family was living next to her parents: They were listed in the 1900 Harrison Township census
with Henderson listed as a widower: The death certificate for Henderson Gregory tells that he
died January 26, 1912 of la grippe (influenza). He was
attended by O. P. Farrington, MD. Foster Gregory provided
the information for his father's death record. He listed
Henderson's parents as Henry and Nanca (?) A. Gregory. The
death certificate tells that Henderson was buried at
Whitworth Cemetery - this is another name for Beckmon
Cemetery, so Henderson is almost certainly buried beside his
wife.
James Foster Gregory died May 19, 1953 in Liberal, Barton County, MO. His death certificate listed his birth date as July 2, 1874 and his wife as Nellie. He was buried in Deerfield Cemetery, Deerfield, Vernon, MO.
Betty (referred to as Bettie above) Elizabeth Gregory and she married Earnest Wayne Weaver in Moundville, Vernon, MO. Mar 19, 1905 (who died tragically in 1914).
