The John Brown family was one of the few families who lived in Southwest Vernon County before the Civil War and were still there after it ended. They were listed in Deerfield Township in Vernon County in the 1860 census:

  • John Brown, age 28, born Ohio
  • Malinda Brown, age 26, born Indiana
  • Emeline Brown, age 4 months, born Missouri
  • Frederick Folks, age 19, born Ohio

The 1870 Moundville Township census shows the family:

  • John Brown, age 39, born Ohio
  • Malinda Brown, age 34, born Tennessee
  • Nancy E. Brown, age 10, born Missouri - she became Mrs. John Ward.
  • Mary A. Brown, age 7, born Missouri
  • John Brown, age 4, born Missouri
  • Robert E. Brown, age 2, born Missouri
  • Wm. Tapp, age 16, born Missouri
  • Wm Packer, age 21, born Missouri, farm hand

By 1880, Malinda was a widow, still in Harrison Township. John had died September 26, 1874.

The cemetery directory notes that the remains of John B. Brown were removed from the family graveyard on their farm to Welborn Cemetery in 1894, apparently when Malinda died. The engraving on the north side of the marker is for Malinda Adaline Brown an infant (1871 - 1872).
